Gender Identities and Roles
Gender identity is what a person identifies with. It is NOT the same as gender role, as popular belief. Gender role is what society has made for their expectations of certain sexes, most normally it is either masculine traits and ideas or famine ones. However, gender role can be used to express gender identity, but they still are not the same thing. Gender role is usually determined by born sex, male or female, gender identity is determined by the person and their own thoughts, feelings, and psych.
"In a way, I feel like kids need to choose for themselves. And who knows maybe they'll choose the one they were born with. I know feminine straight guys and I myself am the epitome of a tomboy. But if you force gender roles on a kid who turns out to be trans then things could get more complicated. Maybe they fear coming out about it because they may think it'll upset their parents. Gender to me is more inside than outside. Like gender is who you are, not what is between your legs or on your chest."
-Kameron A. [On the importance of gender identity vs gender role ideology.]
Discovering one's gender identity can be considered a milestone in life, or some series of important and special events in life. Some even believe its just as important as learning to speak and socialize. For a lot of people, gender identity is something that can be very special for them. For some, they may even keep it completely to themselves, others may want other people to know of their identity so they can be treated the way they feel they should be treated. Either way, gender identity is something that people should have freedom to discover and express.
From experience and events with society's views on identity and roles, there is actually mixed reviews. However, these reviews are often on the extreams of the spectrum. Either the people highly support it, or the people highly disagree, with only a few people in the "in between" zone.
